Sumerian Art

More than 4000 years ago the Sumerians settled in the valleys of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates. The Sumerians were the first human race to form a settlement and brought to an end the nomadic existence of humans till then. With settlement and forming of cities, the Sumerian inventions changed the way all of us live today. Things that we take for granted today like farming, calendar, wheels were all Sumerian inventions. Writing was discovered and the Sumerian art and culture was sophistication in itself. The Sumerian art can be easily separated into ritual objects, state objects and personal objects.

Dating from 2400 BC, archaeologists have found smooth, perfected and idealized features of the classical period in Sumerian art. Some of the portraits are in marble and others in black-gray diorite. Excavations have unearthed great skill and artistry in Sumerian art.

Sumerian art was complex and ornate with clay being the most abundantly used material. Stone, wood and metal had to be imported into Sumer. Painting and sculpture was the main median used and art was primarily used for religious purposes.

Sumerian art had Three-dimensional statuettes made of marble with an obvious hierarchy of size. The tallest statues were of the vegetation God almost about 30 inches in height. A number of statutes and sculptures were religious and depicted the mother goddess. Mother goddesses were worshipped in the hope of bringing fertility to women and crops. These were the next tallest statues. Smaller than these were the priests and the smallest were the worshippers. All statues have their heads uplifted and hands clasped with cylindrical bodies devoid of any gender differentiation. The clasped hands are the pose of supplication or portraying ‘wanting or waiting for something’. In Sumerian art the entire body of the statues is simple except the faces. This reinforces the power of the face with dominating eyes. The vast eyes would be inlaid with colored stones or enamel making them stand out.

These figures were stand ins used during religious rituals. The rituals involved leaving the stand-ins at the temple when a person died. These large eyed statues seemed to speak as they stared open eyed offering supplication to the gods on behalf of whoever donated them to the temples.

Another piece of Sumerian art was the standard or the banners, which was a part of the state. The figures on these banners pretty much summed up the Sumerian life in its entirety. One side of the banner had soldiers leading prisoners to the king, while the other side had a king holding a banquet and commoners bringing him gifts of livestock and farm produce and manufactured goods. This Sumerian art piece is 18 inches decorated with shell and lapis lazuli. The mosaic was designed in bitumen.

Sumerian merchants led their barley and textile filled caravans into Asia Minor and Iran returning with timber, stone and metals. Soon, these were used in making weapons and Sumerian art as well. The Sumerian art forms reflect on the culture and lifestyle of the ancient Sumerians.

Writing Sleuths – The Down and Dirty Art of Trash Hits

A trash hit, also known as a trash cover or dumpster diving, is a technique many private investigators (PIs) use to successfully mine for clues. For writers, it’s a handy technique for your fictional sleuth, but before your character dives into trash, take into consideration the following legalities:

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a person who places his trash at the curbside for pick up has no reasonable expectation of privacy over the trash. However, several municipalities have enacted local ordinances making curbside trash off limits to anyone but the trash man. Also, four states (Hawaii, New Jersey, Washington, and Vermont) may have state supreme court rulings that conflict with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
If your fictional PI obtains trash while she’s on private property, she may face civil and criminal penalties for trespassing and invasion of privacy. Private property, for example, might be a trashcan in someone’s garage, a fenced-in backyard, etc. In our investigations business, when we’ve legally accessed trash, the trashcan has not been on someone’s private property (in our municipality, curbside trash is public or state property, and accessing it is legal).
Although the U.S. Supreme Court and most state laws allow trash recovery, there may be municipal ordinances that forbid this, especially in areas where trash companies serve a number of homes with shared dumpsters. Years ago, there were dumpster trespass ordinances passed to keep the homeless from living in them, and those laws apply to “visitors just reaching for a few bags.” Enforcement of such laws is lax, but the existence of such municipal ordinances might make for an interesting scene with your fictional PI and a local police officer.

Here’s a few tips for researching the legalities of trash hits for a certain region:

Search the website for your municipality or call the town clerk. Ordinances for most towns and cities are now on the web.
Contact your local reference librarian for assistance.

Foraging through trash is like an archeological dig. Your fictional sleuth might get down and dirty, but what’s uncovered may break a case clean open.

Cursive Or Longhand Writing Seems To Be A Dying Art

Cursive or longhand writing seems to be a dying art, but learning to write in cursive is relatively easy using the Montessori Method. With the proliferation of the keyboard and the computer it seems there is no need to start learning to write in cursive.

It looks like cursive writing is on the way out with most kids at school just printing in block letters. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Learning cursive writing is quite easy and it is easier when your children are in kindergarten.

The Montessori system starts the child on learning how to use a pencil. This way the child is learning to scribble with a pencil to build up hand strength and coordination. Another unique part of the Montessori approach is sandpaper letters. I make up the words my child is learning at school in sandpaper letters and get her to trace the words.

The texture of the sandpaper helps to implant the words and letters on your child’s mind.

When your child in tracing the letters you should get her to say the words and the phonic sounds.

This system of learning to write in cursive is very simple because the child is actually writing the words as she traces the letters, without using a pencil. This sets the muscle coordination so when the child picks a pen she knows how to already write the letters.

Most children will start off writing with their finger in the air the same way as tracing the letters before writing with a pencil. I was very impressed with the Montessori system and now my daughter writes in cursive very well

Tips on writing a Level Art Dissertation ? Free Topics Help on Arts Dissertation

Art cannot be defined by using definitive paradigms. It is a topic that envisages the ways in which individuals, groups, communities and nations live, work and practice their customs. Writing an art dissertation is not merely about the word art, but the meaning it entails as a whole. As a study, art dissertations can be very meticulous in their substance and provide information about specific branches of arts in detail.

The first and foremost part of writing an arts dissertation is deciding a particular topic your thesis is going to be based upon. You have to be very specific while choosing the topic of your dissertation. Some of the topics that you can use are listed below for your convenience.

HELPFUL TOPICS

•Art history dissertation

•Fine art dissertation

•Ancient art studies

•Modern art dissertations

•Vocal arts discourse

•Performing arts critique

•Dissertation on art evolution

•Visual art study

•Art dissertation on Sculpture

•Abstract art philosophy

•A discussion on art philosophy

•Graphic arts exposition

•Dissertation on art as a form of expression

•Art Dissertation on political art

•Street art dissertation

The list can go on and on but it is time to move to the next part of this article.

OPENING

Once an appropriate topic is finalised, you have to proceed to the next level.

The primary step towards any type of writing is research, which firstly supplies a particular theme and in the end contributes important material required for the main thesis.

A FITTING TITLE

Subsequent to topic selection is having a suitable title and then to start writing an articulate dissertation on the chosen subject.

THE BODY

This elementary segment of the dissertation needs to have the following sub segments.

•ASSERTIVE ARGUMENT

The assertive argument is established upon genuine findings of your research as well as your own observations of the research. For example you are writing about art history dissertations; here you have to throw light upon each and every aspect of art and its history including its evolution into the new era.

•CONTRADICTORY ARGUMENT

In this section you have to perspicaciously supply contradictory reasoning in comparison to the assertive argument. This part also holds a great deal of importance and should be prepared on realistic grounds. You personal opinions carry a lot of weight here.

•FINDINGS

In this section, you would be required to put forward the findings of your research taking into account all the important elements of the topic.

In the very end, quote all references in a clear manner in relation to the sources of your research.

The assertive argument is established upon genuine findings of your research as well as your own observations of the research. For example you are writing about art history dissertations; here you have to throw light upon each and every aspect of art and its history including its evolution into the new era.

CONTRADICTORY ARGUMENT

In this section you have to perspicaciously supply contradictory reasoning in comparison to the assertive argument. This part also holds a great deal of importance and should be prepared on realistic grounds. You personal opinions carry a lot of weight here.

FINDINGS

In this section, you would be required to put forward the findings of your research taking into account all the important elements of the topic.

In the very end, quote all references in a clear manner in relation to the sources of your research.

The Art of Letter Writing in Business – Is This a Lost Art?

Have you ever received a marketing letter promoting some really good retail goods and been put off by the number of spelling mistakes or grammatical errors? I have received such letters from highly thought of professional companies which have made me wince. How these ever passed the proof reading stage I don’t know. Is good grammar and spelling a lost art? and can it actually lose you business? I get so irritated by these errors that I can’t be bothered to read what the letter is really about, so, yes, business is lost.

Back in my school days spelling and grammar were of prime importance when writing essays on any subject. Weekly spelling tests were the norm. We left school knowing at least how to spell common usage words and how to put a sentence together grammatically. Today I’m not so sure. Going back many years when I first worked in a Bank part of my job was to write letters to solicitors, accountants and customers.

It was very important to not only get the information correct, but also the spelling and grammar.

We had secretaries then who would type the letter and correct any mistakes as they did so. The letter would be returned to me to be checked and then a manager would sign it. The manager would also ensure that spelling, grammar and information was correct. Yes, it was a bit long winded and expensive even if the end result was very good. Over the years staff in most companies has been reduced so that now letters are written straight onto the computer and are rarely checked. No wonder we get mistakes occurring. Most people use computers or word processors and these have a built in spell checker.

This makes life so easy and we all get lazy about our spelling because the computer will do this for us.

However, the English language is full of words which sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings. We have there and their, hear and here, bough and bow to mention just a few. We also have UK and US spelling. Therefore, we cannot just trust the spellchecker completely. We need to proof read our letter or article to ensure that the correct words are used, given the meaning of the sentence.

A little time taken to proof read a letter, or get a colleague to do it, may earn you more sales, less complaints and a reputation for being very professional. In the long term this can save you time, and also money.

Writing articles for the love of art is a great way to make money! When you love to do something and you follow that love, you will find a way to produce monetary value through the promotion of, or product of, that which you love!

Writing articles for money, is no different than painting a picture, or creating a pottery piece. It requires some thought, some interesting twists, some creative promoting and some sense of fulfilling a need!

The value of an article can only be determined by the person who pens it! Others may find no need for the information you write, does this make your piece of art of no value? No, the value lies in what you, the artist produce from your heart.

Often we place value to an artwork, by the number of people who appreciate the work itself, making the cost of such apiece more valuable.

In the case of penning an article, it is not only the piece, but the artist themselves, who add value to the art form.

Will someone jump out there and purchase your article? More than likely not, however, there may be someone who recognizes the talent you have for putting into words, certain ideas and concepts that others may not have.

You may be asked to do piecework or some other form of writing that will enable you to continue doing what you love, while receiving remuneration for your talents.

Don’t give up that which you love, if you need to continue in an avenue of work that you are not prone to, just to pay the bills, start writing on the side.

Make a plan and a regimen that will deliver productive writing efforts.

It’s okay to start out with small writing jobs or volunteering your writing for a local newspaper to get accustomed to being read.

When you do that which you love, you will discover ways to market your wares in a successful paying manner.
